Better question— do you as a 50-60 something adult want to be judged by the world to have the same religious, moral, ethical, political, economic, etc. etc beliefs as your parent, no questions asked by others, no opportunity to point out that you aren’t a carbon copy of your parents? To have everyone assume that you hold the same opinions and behave in the same manner? I mean, my father and I are no/low contact because he was a physician who lost his medical license for molesting patients. And, of course, it didn’t stop with his patients and my parents divorce & no contact with my sister and I followed. After years of therapy (and still battling serious medical anxiety), my biggest accomplishment in life has been breaking a cycle of generational abuse (my father was abused by his mother) and raising great, stable, functional, kind, smart, empathetic kids in a stable two parent family, with a husband who is kind and gentle and open minded with me and with the kids and did 50% of the childcare. Who was involved with the kids, supportive of me, and values my opinion and with whom I regularly sit down and talk out major decisions (involving the kids and everything else), to reach a consensus. Sometimes, I compromise. Sometimes he does. Sometimes there is a middle way. In 25 years of marriage, we’ve never not found a solution. It would break my heart if someone assumed I was a physically, sexually and/or emotionally abusive parent because my father was. Who denied all the work I put in to be different and give my kids better In other news, I’m agnostic and he is very religious. A highlight— “only about 6 people in the world follow all of the Catholic Churches teaching. And the are the only sex people going to heaven.” Ummm okay. Does that include excusing pedophiles? I get why my dad likes that. I’m a moderate Democrat and he was a libertarian until MAGA (of course). He thinks GW Bush was a top 5 President because he signed a late term abortion ban of some sort on Day 1. I’m strongly pro-choice. Etc, etc. I don’t believe in judging full grown adults by the actions of their parents, unless those adult children are somehow indicating they approve of those opinions and actions, or, you know, accept a senior role in a parent’s political Administration. Harris is clearly low to no contact with her father. Even if he was a full blown Marxist or communist or fascist, and not an academic who studies that subject (big difference), it doesn’t make her one. Judge her on her statements, actions, voting record and life (and if you disagree with her on those things, I respect your right to do so)— not cherry picked portions of her fathers’ opinions (manipulated by MAGA into a soundbite when, as Jeff points, his academic speciality is complex and teaching about Marxism doesn’t make him a Marxist). Unless you want the world to assume that you are a carbon copy of your parents and attribute the worst parts of your parents to you. Some people get idyllic upbringings and do agree with their parents on all major issues. That makes them lucky, not morally superior. And, most people do not. I think that by the time they are parents, my own kids will give our parenting decent marks. But even in their early 20s are already more progressive than me. Which is fine. They don’t need to be my carbon copy. Just decent people who treat others well. And if they choose to be progressive, conservative, religious, etc as adults, that’s fine. They don’t have to hold the same beliefs I do. Although it would sadden me if they treated others poorly. Kamala Harris is an adult. She deserves to be judged on her own merits and not have her father’s beliefs thrown in her face. So does Trump, BTW. So do we all.
