The LA Innocence Project is reputable (see https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/los-angeles-innocence-project-bias/ ) but is distinct & separate from the better-known National Innocence Project.
It's to increase their profile and raise money. Are there people in the prison system who were wrongly convicted? Sure. But there aren't enough of those truly just railroaded to keep these groups in business. So these organizations love to take on high profile cases that are decades old. They try to poke holes in evidence that was collected eons ago, and can make retrying the case very difficult, especially when the witnesses and the people who originally worked on the case for the government are long gone. It's a classic case of something that started with good intentions, but has become scam-like in order to sustain itself. See, also, the Southern Poverty Law Center.
They aren’t “in business,” they’re charities. Taking on Scott Peterson is *not* likely to win them a lot of donations, as the prevailing sentiment that he is in fact guilty is so strong. Scott’s a bastard and no doubt about it. It seems very likely that he killed Laci and Conner. That said, I suspect it was the Amber Frey tapes and his general awfulness that convicted him. It’s troubling that the most recent ruling has denied the defense access to DNA testing for most of the items in question. I think it’s possible that Scott was very unlucky, and while he certainly had no care for Laci or Conner, he may not have killed them. And I’d rather know the truth. Scott’s sister blew my mind talking about Amber Frey “Well, I don’t call it an affair. He just wanted a sexual. relationship.” Lady, what do you think an affair is? It’s easy to see how Scott became the kind of person he did. One of the best things to come of the new attention is the reminder that murder by their husband or intimate partner is the LEADING cause of death for pregnant women. At a time when women are being stripped of their rights, dehumanized, and male power is being elevated, it’s a powerful reminder of reality.
