His supporters have always been here, but couldn't be motivated by candidates like McCain or Romney. Trump's superpower is that he has absolutely no shame - when called out on a lie he doubles down, triples down, then blames the media. Maybe somebody like Vance can carry on that legacy in a post-Trump world but it's just as likely that the GOP implodes in the resulting vacuum.
This. The Rs have not won the popular vote in 20 years, but can win the electoral vote by appealing to niche groups (like the evangelicals, gun rights and anti-abortion groups) in various areas of the country. They have gotten into bed with those groups and the sane Rs have gone along with it (with a few exceptions who get shunned if they make any noise). The party will implode as it becomes too extreme. Most Americans are not that extreme, but yes, extreme right has always been there. I grew up in an area with John Birchers (this was 60 years ago). They are not evil people, but they hold beliefs that most people do not hold. OP, maybe you have always lived in DC or a very middle of the road area. I am more angry with the R party (if you can call it anger) because they supported Trump and did not put up any guard rails (like maybe a felon cannot be a candidate in their party).
