Apparently electric buses was a waste. Read the news.
Electric buses are cheaper in the long run because of lower maintenance— they just cost more upfront. That’s why MCPS was able to find a contractor who said they would front the upfront costs in return for long term savings. It was a win-win, unless you think MCPS should have kept the long term savings for themselves. Now the IG is reporting the contractor might have difficulties supplying the buses, maybe because demand is so high. That’s not great but it doesn’t tell me anything about whether the original decision was reasonable or if the delay will cost MCPS anything. But the people who hate MCPS (or more likely hate all public schools) just throw crap against the wall because they don’t need to have an intelligent discussion they just need to complain.
How are they cheaper with maintenance? They all have moving parts equal and the batteries are expensive. And, to get rid of good buses may not save money.
Diesel buses are crazy expensive to maintain. That’s why it cost MCPS millions to backfill buses when the electric ones weren’t available. (Maintenance isn’t about the wheels— it’s about the engine)
But electric buses are twice as expensive to buy.
