Tons of kids quit winter swim. Some people sign up their kids for winter swim after they do really well in summer league. I have seen coaches encourage this. But a lot of the kids with a knack for swimming are generally athletic, which means they are also good at other sports. Quite a few of them will gravitate to those other sports after a couple of years. I would argue that the winter swim decision should be based more on how much the kid enjoys swimming vs. how fast they are. A kid who enjoys swimming is going to stick with it longer than the kid who is fast but likes other sports just as much or more.
Yes, absolutely and I wish more people understood this. For 4 years, parents have asked why our son hasn’t started club swim. He’s been to divisionals 4xs, top age group swimmer multiple times etc. He likes swimming with his buddies every summer but he loves 3-4 other sports far more and didn’t even enjoy 1x per week stroke and turn. We respect that and let him choose what he enjoys. To their credit, his coaches totally get that. You are only a kid once!
