Obama was not elected on the premise that he was going to start a war in Afghanistan, but rather that he was going to end it. Here we are 3.5 years later and no better off and 1,000 more dead. Add that to the billions for the war since he came into office. His strategy was to surge troops and double down. It failed. He failed. I think the violence and inability to train an Afghan army that can self police is clear. When we leave on the preset and announced timeline, the Taliban will rise again and take control He could have ended the war and closed Gitmo as promised right after he was elected with the same result. He did not. He will go down in history as the president who lost this war.
During the campaign, Obama said that he would withdraw our troops from Iraq and refocus on Afghanistan. He kept that commitment. What you left unsaid was that the mess he had to clean up in Afghanistan was created by George W. Bush. You want to give W credit for killing UBL, but put the mess in Afghanistan firmly in Obama's lap. If anything, the exact opposite is true. It appears that Obama's Afghanistan strategy has failed. It is pretty clear that Bush's policy had failed beforehand, and there is no evidence that McCain could have done any better. Certainly, Romney is not prepared to succeed in Afghanistan. Basically, Afghanistan is an unwinnable situation -- something Bush might have considered before getting involved there. Obama inherited a bad situation. He thought he had a plan for success. He was wrong. A comparable situation is Richard Nixon. Do you blame him for losing Vietnam?
