CLT it is one of the busiest airports in the US. Good news is all of the construction should make it easier to navigate, and should be done by 2025. either way, I avoid it if I were you.
It's #10. Miami, JFK which were mentioned, are busier: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_busiest_airports_in_the_United_States I think Charlotte's issue is they grew too fast. There's really only one other airport in the Southeast region -- Atlanta (#1 in the US, and #1 worldwide), and the Southeast in general has seen a lot of population growth. Miami is too far south to really be considered part of that region. Charlotte's issue is you need to walk between its 5 terminals/piers. Atlanta has more terminals but also a train to take you between each in 1-2 minutes. Much better design. What we basically need is another major airport in the region, but geographically, there aren't any good candidates that are nearby and can take on that capacity.
I’m from Miami. When I went to CLT I found it smooth. Here’s my take on these two. Charlotte‘s AA hub schedules flights from one side of the airport via tight connection. So you see many people running to their flights. If you have a layover that’s larger, it’s just very packed at the main restaurant corridor. Charlotte is a SE busy airport vs Miami being a busy international airport. Charlotte is now expanding internationally though and I do t think they have the capacity for this. Miami. Oh boy. So many flights that you land on the tarmac in the heat and walk for MILES. Not exaggerating. They are also perpetually in construction. Doors are not working or some other ridiculous Miami only thing. They stagger soo many flights and luggage that it’s like a concert at arrival time. That’s just domestic. The one thing that’s good at Miami is that the airport is so big there’s minimal lines at some gates. And and let’s not forget the driving carts that almost run you over!! A lawsuit waiting to happen. The drivers run reckless because Miami and lack of rules.
