I would choose stokes over Powell so you have a good chance of getting into DCI. Most UMCdamilies leave Powell and BM because they don’t want macfarland middle school.
This right here. To me this would be the clear tie-breaker. Middle school comes up quicker than you think and you could be in a panic if you don’t have an option. Stokes decreases that concern significantly. Why give up a good chance at middle school for a school at which you know for certain you’ll have to: (1) take your (not good) chances in the lottery; (2) go private; or (3) leave DC.
My DC went to BMPV for elementary and PP is correct. Like many of DC's classmates, we switched to a DCI feeder in fifth grade specifically for DCI. A few families try MacFarland, few stay through 8th, and many use fifth to lottery for O-A, Latin, Basis, and/or DCI feeders. Really unclear what younger families will do now that DCI isn't a guarantee. I wouldn't want to switch my child in fifth to MV or Stokes only to strike out for DCI in sixth. I've heard mixed things about how good/bad the DCI odds will be after this year for new students (i.e., those without sibling preference), so I guess it depends on how that goes.
