Because people see it as a boring state school with nothing special about it. That affects the number of OOS applicants, and the low OOS admittance rate affects the ultimate number of attendees. That said, my BFF in NC says it's a well respected school over there with an unusually spirited alumni base. It's almost identical to what Tech is to Virginians in many ways. There's no reason for a Virginian to go to NC State when they have VT.
This. ~VA born, NC raised, NCSU grad, back in VA
This is not true. My son is considering NCSU because they offer a major that’s not offered at any Virginia schools.
Ok. I’ll rephrase the quote I highlighted to account for your son. For the vast majority of Virginians, there is little reason to consider NCSU when Tech has SO many overlapping majors. They are essentially, but not exactly, the same. As always, YMMV. Textile Sci/Engr? If so, those kids were wicked smart in my day — as good as the ChemEs and often had a creative flair too. Even with most of the mills gone (or overseas), there’s still a need! Go Pack!
Clearly we have an NC State booster here who has a kid majoring in… textiles. Or perhaps she herself has a major in… textiles. Either way.
