I think the vast majority of rec parents don't want to see how far their kid's team can go. My kid plays rec soccer because I'm only willing to pay for one travel sport at a time and I'm not willing to drive an hour for a soccer game. The parents on our team would forgo driving to some far flung field for a single game. When it looked like we might be going to Fredericksburg, the plan was to do the team party that day and forfeit.
