I think Nicola Coughlan is gorgeous and I like the way she plays Penelope, but the styling on the show works hard to make her look silly. I know the idea is that her mother is dressing her and her mother is silly, but it's frustrating because she is the only non-waif of the you "marriageable women" on the show and when they giver her those ludicrous red ringlets and then stick her in these bright orange and yellow costumes with cheap looking fabric and tons of crap on them, she looks ridiculous. I'm sure if you put Phoebe Dynevor or Simone Ashley in garish, tacky costumes and gave them ridiculous wigs, they too would look absurd. I just don't get why they dressed Coughlan for laughs, especially knowing she'd likely be a lead at some point. I think it makes it so much harder to make this pivot.
Jonathan Bailey had horrible sideburns in the Season 1. When it was his turn to be the lead, the cut his hair and got rid of the sideburns. Instant glow up on an already hot guy. Both Nicola and Luke N are having similar glow ups happening to them.
They put up the first 5 minutes of episode 1 and Colin definitely got a significant glow up.
Nicola also looks way better. The wig has softer waves and is more face framing instead of the ridiculous bright red coils she had before, and it looks like they finally started fitting her dresses to her boobs instead of (inexplicably!) running the seam directly across the middle of her chest in order to create the lease flattering silhouette a busty woman can possibly wear. If you've ever seen her on the red carpet, you are aware that she's stunning and has a really great figure, though her chest is in the challenging-to-fit range. They also seem to have toned down the color on her wardrobe -- more pastels and including some greens and blues instead of just neon yellow and pink all the time. So much nicer with her coloring.
I think based on her outfits, her glow up is going to be part of the season. The pink and yellow is a bit over the top on purpose to set up for later contrast.
