OP here and I came to a similar conclusion, though I love the Nic and Zoe and ordered it anyway!

Despite my previously stated misgivings about Ann Taylor, I took a peek for the first time in a long while and found this one

The flowy skirt won't ride up when sitting and it should work well with a navy blazer if I decide to go more business-like. The event is for a nonprofit audience, which runs a wide spectrum on attire.

Fingers crossed that the dress fits nicely. If not, I have some other good options from this group.
