OP here - I was told that many families in private schools enlist college counselors at the cost of $10k+. We are only considering Catholic schools in DC to apply to next year. Was wondering if this was a private independent phenom or if many Catholic families also paid for additional college counseling.
It totally depends on your needs and how much hand holding you want. The HS college counselors will generally meet your child where they are, suggest schools for consideration, answer app questions, help review some essays. They may help nudge kids to study more, improve the rigor of their courses or strive for a certain test score. A private counselor can help with HS course selection specific to your child's goals, identify any gaps between the college your child wants and their grades/ECs and suggest EC's to bolster the app. A private can nudge your kid into studying harder, getting tutoring to prep for tests, or joining activities if they want college xyz. A private counselor can go through every single little question on the app or essays and answer every random question that pops into your head (of which there will be tons). You definitely don't have to get a counselor but those who want a more personalized attention or hand holding through a really complex process often do.
