I'm a scientist and the data does not support your assertions. Breast feeding a 2-7 year old is not natural in any society, but that number is an oft quoted Kathy Dettwyler paper. There is no country in the world with an average age of breast feeding higher than 31 months (Bangladesh).  Age 4 is not "within the realm of normal". [/quote]

I spent a lot of time in the mountain villages of Nepal, and I saw A LOT of very old children (say 4/5?) children nursing.  I'm sure that across Nepal the average ages were lower.  Just sharing some anecdotal info.  It took a while to get used to it, frankly, as it was a bit disconcerting to me for whatever reason.  ANyway, flash forward a few years to having my own kids...

...and DS#1 was weaned at 2 yrs and a few months.  Why?  Don't know.  See PP above who said convenience, comfort, any number of reasons.  We DID NOT do it in publice except for the odd long flight, and then I definitely covered us both.  At a restaurant?  No way.  Crass and rude.  DS#2?  Basically self weaned at just under a year.  Kids are different, and breast feeding is not one-size-fits all.

But feeding a toddler of that age (definitely outside of any society's norms) in a restaurant is inappropriate behaviour.[/quote]
