I read once the stats have to be there but they know almost as soon as they read the essays.
My son is an Echols Scholar (1st Year). He had the stats, but I really think it came down to his essays, ECs, and recommendations. He went to Governor's School and is just one of those kids who is curious and loves to learn. Yes, they're looking for good students academically, but there has to be something more than test scores and GPA. https://echols.as.virginia.edu/frequently-asked-questions-faqs-about-echols-scholars-program
Has he enjoyed it/ do you recommend it? My child is deciding between UVA Echols and a school that's higher-ranked than UVA but is wondering if the Echols would even that out
The main advantage of Echols is that CLAS distribution requirements are waived. The 2nd advantage is there is a separate Dean for Echols, which sometimes means one gets better advising.
