As for the violence, think about the pressure teens are under:  work, work, work to get the hightest GPA/scores you can so you can get into the 'best' college, then work, work, work to get great grades, knowing that your scholarships depend on it, your parents are paying a fortune, and/or that you will be paying your student debt for years, and then look forward to graduating and probably not having a job and having to move back home.  That's all enough to send someone who's not stable over the edge.
