The reality is that nobody cares what you wear. What do you wear to dinner with your parents?
It sounds like OP's family is way less formal/posh than her boyfriend's family. That's why she's having issues.
Okay but the reality is she is overthinking it. If they are a-holes it doesn't matter what she wears and if they are nice it doesn't matter what she wears. Besides, ask your boyfriend, they are dating right? You think she can't figure out if she should wear gym shorts or business casual?
I think she is asking for guidance because she's nervous, feels out of her element, and wants to make a good impression. I can't see why you find this confounding or offensive. Good for you if you've never once in your life been nervous about an event, even a teeny tiny one.
Of course I have been nervous about an event, speaking engagements, etc. But the advice I had was, your overthinking it, you know the subject, relax. Not OMG YALE AND MIT, YOURE SCREWED MAKE SURE YOU WEAR THE PERFECT OUTFIT. It must be flats, if you don't wear flats he will definitely break up with you. oh if they see your shoulders call it quits. You all are crazy. If she takes advice here she will look like a 50 year old women from the 90's anyway. Yall don't know any MIT or Yale people me thinks.
Yes, she's gotten awful advice - she should not look like Working Girl. But she's probably not overthinking it - she's trying to code switch and that's not easy. If she had the right outfit, she wouldn't be here asking. Have some empathy. And offer some ideas. My in laws couldn't care less what I wear - thank goodness. But it sounds like that's not the case for her boyfriend's parents - or at least she's worried that's not the case. So she's just trying to navigate this new social class. Lucky you if you've never had to do that.
Which brings us back the right advice. If they are a-holes they don't care they will hate you, if they are nice it doesn't matter they will like you. Ask your boyfriend what he thinks. The advice here is bad, not something worth taking, wrong. Pinterest is more helpful.
