FWIW I’ve never been overweight, not since I was a 9lb baby. But I’ve been all over the “normal” range of the BMI scale. I’m 5’4. I have been 112lbs to 132lbs. I think I look best at 120. When I was over 130, men couldn’t keep their eyes off me. When I was 112, people randomly asked if I was feeling OK (not entirely because of my weight, but because I did actually look tired and weak all the time).
I have the same stats. What I’ve found is I get more attention at 130, but the quality of attention I get at 112 is significantly better. I don’t really need the UPS guy or the garbage man to think I’m hot, or my personal favorite, the guys walking out of their court hearings to shout out at me. I want to investment banker or the doctor. I weigh 120 now because I’m a middle aged mom, but I miss the 112 days. I really, really do.
I’m OP back again and there is certainly a class, cultural, and ethnic context. I also didn’t specify race - I’m half white (German/Irish) and half Middle Eastern (Lebanese). Wealthier people, especially White and Asian, value the thin and sleek aesthetic. I would say at 132 I received more attention from the general male population, not just lower SES. At 112 I only received attention from White guys, and a lot of people thought I looked sick (because I was).
