It's mind blowing to me that some kids haven't watched TV shows. And only a handful of movies? My parents didn't let us get into pop culture and I hated it. (Did things like wouldn't buy a DVD player so we only had VHS tapes, didn't let us get a PlayStation etc). My 7 year old watches as many movies and TV shows as she likes as long as homework and activities are done. She is ahead in all subjects (gets mostly 4s on the 1-4 scale). She's a great reader, flys through chapter books, and she's a great leader and listener. I'm not saying you should give them unlimited screentime, but you sound very controlling if at 7 your kid hasn't watched any shows. They will resent you for it if they don't already.
We don’t own a TV it’s not like I’m hiding something from her. It’s just not an option for any of us. We aren’t a screen free because we are trying to be controlling or we see any real harm in moderate amount of screen time. I wish I was that organized or intentional as a parent, but the trust is we’re just a very ADHD household and screens just don’t hold our attention very well. I feel like all my kids are fairly well-adjusted in life. And DD has watched movies and TV shows in various situations (friends or family homes). She’s social and has a lot in common wi to her peers. She just hasn’t watched any consistently enough to have a favorite that will hold her attention.
I understand the TV if you all have tablets/phones/laptops. But it sounds like maybe you and your spouse have those things and child has no tablet. So you get to go monkey around on dcum or whatever you do for leisure and they have no tablet? They are 7, it's not going to hurt their brain. Anyways, TV would be best for kids vs tablets for screentime. Don't you like to watch a movie as a family sometimes? I'm low income and even my house has some tvs, there's no excuse to not have a TV for your kids to use every once in awhile.
