My kid is in 3 places (all public), deferred 2 (both private; ED and EA). Waiting to hear on 15 more.
You applied to 20 schools? WHY
Our kid (now in college) applied to four. Got into three. Picked one. Done.
If you stick to 2 targets and 2 true safeties (or more safeties) then that strategy works. But if you want to apply to several Reaches/High reaches, you have to include more. Also, if very high stats, you need to include more targets and safeties because you might be yield protected (WL/denied) because they assume you don't really want to attend.
Or if you are trying to fit a budget you may include more targets/safeties in search of better merit $$. One of mine applied to 4 big public Us -- one in-state target, one in-state safety, two OOS safeties. Got in everywhere went to the target. By this time in senior year I think he'd only heard from two of the schools. The mainly wanted to go to an OOS LAC so had 5 safeties (of varying level of perceived safety and varying levels of merit likelihood) plus an in-state reach. The safeties all ended up similar in cost after merit awards and it was good for her to have several to pick from.
