Journalism is a HIGHLY competitive field where people are often expected to "pay dues" through low-paying jobs in order to build their reputation and portfolio to qualify for higher-paying jobs later. Does she have long-term goals she's working toward? There's also nothing wrong with wanting more from work than money. Don't devalue her accomplishments by only looking at salary.
You are speaking from the past. News jobs now are where you graduated from, and kind of how Woke you are. You don't pay your dues any longer. That is very depressing concept, since I'm now in my mid 50s, that is what it used to be like when I dated a journalist making $14k a year in Small town, Arkansas. She worked hard, lots of interviews and reports, and now it is where you graduated from.
