I actually attend the LDS church on Western that was destroyed by the fire on Monday. We are being told that although we won’t know an official cause for awhile, right now they are suspecting it was an electrical fire that started in the attic.
That’s so sad! I hope you didn’t lose anything irreplaceable.
Thank you! It is a sad time for our congregation. It was a 72 year building, so I’m sure plenty of things were lost that are irreplaceable. And we still don’t know if the building itself is a complete loss or if can be rebuilt with the same charm that we all love, at least in part. But we count our blessings that it was unoccupied and that firefighters were not seriously injured when they got trapped.
A generic 72 year old building was built in the 1950s is NOT historic in DC. Stop pretending like it is. Planning probably already had that specific building slated for upzoning. While arson is bad, folks should probably be happy if this accelerates redevelopment.
I didn't call it historic, I called it old. And I'm calling you mean for cheering at the thought of an arsonist burning down a church (although the evidence so far is that it was an electrical fire). It was a church that has been in constant use for worship and fellowship for 72 years. It has great meaning for those of us who choose to attend and we are sad about its loss. Whatever you thoughts are about religion or my specific religion, you should have enough kindness in you to feel sorry for others who have lost something important to them. And its isn't in DC, it's just across Western Ave in Maryland so I think it's safe from your upzoning.
