Definitely go over all of their finances to see what they can afford.  We modeled it out to see what they could afford in several scenarios like if one died before the other, if one needed to move to assisted living, if they both needed to move to assisted living, etc.  Knowing what they can afford is key before starting anything else.

So wish my ILs would have done this 20 years ago, then 10 years ago, etc. For now they are fine as they are able to live @ home with M-F 9-5 care for FiL. It’s going to get complicated if that arrangement doesn’t hold as MiL has announced she will not move to a 1BR + den. I get that but they should have saved accordingly. [/quote]
