This! Everything that a student excels at isn't a hook. That's their actual application. Hooks are:

Both my parents and my grandparents went to Harvard. On one side even a great grandparent went. Take me.

Those are hooks. There are a lot of different examples. None of them (except arguably the last one) is based on excelling in an area like winning the national debate tournament, the Raytheon science competition, etc.[/quote]
