Goodwill exists as a way to keep the economy going.  It's "Wishcycling", meaning people donate crap they hope someone else will use, but they just ship it overseas where it ends up in a landfill, local water streams, or the ocean.  Americans say "I will donate this and buy something new" and it's a way the government tricks us into stimulating the economy.  [/quote]

Goodwill actually exists to provide jobs for people who can’t otherwise get them. People who are coming out of incarceration, etc. The idea is, they get rehabilitative work experience that leads fo better employment. The donation/retail component is a means to an end.

Having said that, I 100% agree that it is wish-cycling. I would be surprised if 20% of the items donated actually get sold. Which better than nothing, until you figure a large number of donors are replacing what they donate.[/quote]
