6th Grade AAP teacher here. I have students come back and state Math 7 Honors is too easy. I personally feel there should be four options. Algebra 1 7Honors for kids who got 7th grade math in 6th so more extensions are possible. 7Honors for kids skipping 7th grade math 7Regular There is a real push from the county to have more kids in at least one honors class and for all kids to take Algebra 1 in 8th.
Interesting considering majority of kids aren’t testing as proficient in grade level math as it is- only 26% of 8th graders tested proficient nationally last yr
Yes, I don’t see how they can expect all 8th graders to take Algebra 1. I know I’m old, but when I was in 8th grade Algebra 1 was the most advanced class available, and in my high school there were still juniors and seniors taking Algebra 1.
Different school systems do different things. The advanced math class was Algebra in 7th in my Boston suburb in the 1970’s. We also did two years of Algebra and then geometry, instead of putting the year of Geometry between the two Algebras.
