Oh re: badges. My DS7 and I don't really keep track if he got all the badges or not. We were not asked to make up any mandatory activities on our free time, and he was moved on to the next level. Maybe it's less strict at that younger age or we got a less strict Den Leader?  [/quote]

No, that's the policy of Cub Scouts, since the motto is "Do Your Best."  :)  The kids earn what they can (or what they want), and progression from one level to the next is based on age/school grade, not on achievements.  Differs from Scouts BSA (what we call "big Scouts" in our family, since DS is in a Troop and DD is still a Cub Scout).

Your den leader should be keeping track of DS' requirements for you if he completes things at den meetings, and you can let the leader know of any requirements that he completes at home.  (We use a database for this that you can access too.)  Some kids are very achievement-motivated, and some are not: Cub Scouting absolutely has room for everyone to do as much or as little as fits for their family, although kids will of course feel a stronger sense of belonging if they attend and participate as much as they can.[/quote]
