Maybe get a hard-sided pen to cordon off the puppy on hardwood in case it barks nonstop in the bedroom. And the pee pads all over it is ridiculous. If your mother-in-law was smart, she would just not make a big deal over your reasonable parameters, and then figure out how to make it work.
