You will love “50 Things That Made the Modern Economy” and “Stuff Matters” by Mark Miodownik. Both remind me very much of “This Podcast will Kill You.” I also recommend “The Secret Life of Groceries.” It will change how you think about food and make you see stores in a new way!

The Golden Thread and Worn are about history through the lens of fabric and clothes. Much more interesting than most would expect.

A Midwife’s Tale by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich is an interesting peek into colonial US life including prevailing attitudes at the time. It is a little academic but I found it readable bc I like that period.

Not specific to your brief but good and available from DC library: Muppets in Moscow, Tracers in the Dark.
