when we did drop off, the guys rooms still looked like prison cinderblock rooms but saw that the girl rooms had the twinkle lights and bean bag chairs and color! I would have loved the more fun rooms to come back to every night when I was in college, but was not done at my school at time.
It wasn't at my school either. But I still painted my half of the room, put up handmade picture boards, put up cute curtains, bought a coordinating rug. And I was in college 40 years ago. I do the same thing for my kids now. So I don't hire a designer but I do the design myself. My kids are in their dorm rooms for 9 months. There is no need for it to look like a dump. Oddly, my work is very non-creative. Perhaps this is my way of using the creative side of my brain? Fortunately my kids expect and appreciate it.
Painting the walls? Ridiculous.
Ridiculous? Why? It was a place where I was spending 9 or 10 months. I wanted my dorm room to reflect me, and, honestly, I didn't really care much that it wasn't allowed. The walls were a mixture of cinder block and panels. It took me about 3 hours after I finished taping off the ceiling floors. I did a good job. It was a northern school where it got dark early and my part of the room always glistened in the evening light. When my roommate dropped out (all F's because of too much partying) after the first semester, I painted the rest of the room. It was lovely if I do say myself. And it was certainly the gathering spot for my whole floor.
