"Lied to?" It was given to the FBI for the purposes of a criminal investigation. They were under no obligation to confirm they had a laptop or its authenticity.

They allowed the letter from the former intelligence officials to circulate when they KNEW the letter was a lie. 
They were absolutely under obligation to correct the record once people - WHO USED THEIR POSITIONS OF OFFICIAL STATUS TO GIVE THE LETTER CREDIBILITY - made claims that were blatantly false.  A letter orchestrated by Antony Blinken himself.... part of the Biden campaign.

So, it is AOK for a bunch of former intelligence people to influence the election without interference.
