Republicans keep showing their true colors: self-centered, mean spirited, bigots. But I guess that makes them true Christians! Not in my Christian Church.
Actually, if I were to remove the word "Republicans" from your post and substititute another group of people (espeically one that you like and admire), I bet you'd call me out as a bigot . . . and rightly so. You don't sound any different than any other bigot. It's just that you're posting in a forum that is largely liberal, so you think it's alright to make such a sweeping generalization about Republicans.
Sorry, when senior Republican leaders make mean spirited statements about the poor, illegal immigrants, and gays, and fail to call out others who say such things, I have no issues with the view that the dominate view in the current Republican Party is self-centered, mean spirited and bigoted. This, of course, does not mean all individual Republicans are same, but those who are NOT MUST SPEAK UP.
18:42 here. I stand by my statement. Regardless of your opinion about Republicans and those who need to speak up, that poster would have been slammed as a bigot, if a similar comment had been directed towards a group favored or protected by most posters contributing to this forum.
Party affiliation is an ethical choice. It is therefore relevant to criticize the ethics of the adherents. It is not the same as making the same statement about blacks or women or Jews, which are groups of people based on biology or heritage. I am a Catholic, and frankly I think we deserve to hear criticism. I may feel that a particular criticism is unfair or overly broad, but I find it ridiculous when Catholic posters accuse any critic of bigotry, merely because they criticize. If you feel the criticism is unfair, so be it. Defend the point. But the idea that a political party can't be judged for their behavior is ludicrous. You treat the claim of bigotry like a kid hiding behind mama's skirt. Get out from behind the skirt and defend yourself, and leave the claims of bigotry to those who experience actual bigotry, not mere criticism.
So you believe that all Republicans can be fairly described as self-centered, mean, bigots who don't act in a Christian manner? I wouldn't ever write off an entire group the way the original post was written. Yes, certain aspects of the Republican Party, Catholic Church, etc. are fair game for criticism. And, yes, according to dictionary definitions, bigotry does include intolerance or animosity toward members of a political group.
THEN THOSE REPUBLICANS WHO ARE NOT SELF-CENTERED, MEAN SPIRITED AND BIGOTED MUST SPEAK UP OR LEAVE THE PARTY!! YOU CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS.
Your "shouting" in all caps does not change the fact that the original post of this discussion was bigoted, per dictionaries' definitions of bigotry.
