His first marriage was a mess. He was about 20-21 when his 24-25 year old girlfriend Samantha (who picked him up earlier, unclear when, perhaps 2-3 years earlier) got pregnant with their baby, then they got married. He shouldn't have cheated, but they shouldn't have gotten started on those conditions, and his first wife should have been more responsible about starting it, as she was 4 years older than a very young adult Tom when they got together.
I think Tom Hanks is probably a pretty good guy, but the timeline makes this much messier. Hanks eldest child, Colin, was born in 1977. He married Colin's mom, Samantha Lewes, in 1978. He met Rita Wilson for the first time in 1981. His second child with Lewes was born in 1982. He did a movie with Wilson in 1985. He and Lewes divorced in 1987. Hanks and Wilson married in 1988. While Hanks was quite young when he met Lewes, they were together for 10 years and married for 9, and had two kids together. That's long enough to get your shit together and makes the age difference between them far less significant by the time and and Wilson started seeing each other. And the idea that Hanks and Wilson only started dating once Hanks and Lewes were separated is.... unlikely, given the timeline. Hanks seems like a really nice guy, I've never heard a bad word about his behavior on set, he is kind to fans, and his wife and kids (from both marriages) seem to really love and appreciate him. He's obviously not a snake. But he's not some kind of saint either. He made mistakes. He did some questionable stuff and probably betrayed his first wife and his kids from that marriage on some level. He likely took the cowards way out to some degree. It happens. Doesn't mean you need to hate him or stop watching his movies, but it's a good reminder that NO ONE is perfect, no relationship is perfect, life is always more complex than people want it to be. The fact that his younger sons are sometimes pretty entitled and questionable illustrates this as well. Life is complicated, even for Tom Hanks.
