1. I do not find that comment too rude. It's intrusive, certainly, and not something I'd say, but I wouldn't mind if someone said it to me. 2. This is why people don't have stickers on their car - others make too many assumptions. (Also, unless it's magnetic, it looks bad when it weathers and you try to take it off.) 3. If your public school is really bad and moving is out of the question, then I suppose private might make sense. But otherwise it's way too ruinous for what it is, and it does not confer a college admissions advantage. And before someone says special needs, actually my son with complex needs has been better served in public. Now he's going to a good university. 4. But it's wrong to make assumptions, of course. Maybe you have a different, special, situation.
Responding to you #3...there are a variety of reasons someone might choose private over public. Many "good public schools" aren't great for every kids. It's awesome it was great for yours, but don't assume that it would be just because your kid is better served in public. It drives me crazy when people get preachy about school choice. Someone else's decision of where they send their kid doesn't need to mean anything to you or your choices for your own kid.
PP you replied to. I know, and I would never be so rude as to make in-person comments. However, here I feel I do have to warn parents of special needs kids, and perhaps others: having tried private and public schools for my kids, and gone through the college admissions process this past school year for one of them (who has special needs), and compared notes with all my friends whose kids in privates and publics in this area... ... I really feel that privates *usually* only make sense for those rich enough that they don't notice. I acknowledge there are exceptions! Which is why I would never presume to judge a particular family's choices. But in general? Yeah, just do your due diligence as a parent and skip private school tuition. Public school with services, accommodations, tutoring and tailored therapies and activities will be cheaper and a better fit.
