Doubtful this can be tracked. How much is this going to cost?
You know nothing. As someone who does some forensic work like this, the vast majority of emails can be tracked. The question is how clever was the writer in covering their tracks. If they were really good and knew what they were doing, they could cover their tracks and the trail will end in a dead end. I'd say the vast majority, well over 98% of messages are not sent by people who can do that. And most of the public will not be able to cover their tracks. So, with a reasonable electronic forensic team, they can find the origin.
And then what? Prosecute for a mean email? It was classless and wrong, but a full-fledged investigation is a lot.
If it was a student they will suspend the student and that kid will be booted from Cheerleading. The article is poorly written but what I get from the article is that there have been some issues with some kids on the Oakton Cheerteam and a kid or a Mom is blaming the outcome of whatever is happening on the fact that the Coach was Black and is disappointed that another Black coach has been hired. I have no clue if the kid who took the picture of the Coach talking with Cheerleader was worried that the other Cheerleader was going to beat them up or the Coach. It sounds like a weird connection to make, that particular incident with the letter that was sent after that Coach left the team. I am guessing the meeting was poorly attended because 1) Parents and Cheerleaders didn’t like the old Coach 2) Knew they didn’t send the email and didn’t feel like being lectured 3) Knew they didn’t send the email but agreed and didn’t feel like being lectured or 4) Knew they sent the letter and didn’t want to be lectured.
