As a teacher who works with K’s I say do both the evaluation and the retention. We are in FCPS and retain kids here. Any chance you can move if the school won’t budge?
OP here. School said kid qualifies for an IEP. But doesn't appear like they'd qualify if they repeat K. The individualized support at school has made a big difference. But I imagine so would repeating K. So options appear to be: 1. Repeat K, no IEP, some tutoring after school 2. Go into 1st, IEP, some tutoring after school Would appreciate opinions of parents who have experiences with this. (Again, we are on a wait-list for private testing but that likely won't happen until after we have to make these decisions).
Not having an evaluation and iep for a child struggling makes no sense c. Holding them back will make them a year older but if there is a learning disorder holding back will delay them getting help when they need it the most. The longer they go without help, the harder it will be long term. Respecting k I’ll not help. Put them in summer school, get a tutor and get evaluated and also work with them daily yourself. Don’t wait for mcps to help or fix this. They will make promises and do nothing.
I agree. Repeating the same curriculum without supports really hasnt been shown to be effective. Id take the IEP and then after private testing if additional services are needed, I’d seek an update. I will add that I was in your shoes but at a higher grade level and the services make all the difference in the world.
