There are people who post on DCUM who are actually paid writers and then there are "writers" who are just fantasists, sadly.
Was that directed at me? I am the PP. I am a real life paid author with a big 5 publisher, happy to answer any questions since we are anonymous!
I don't know what to ask but would love to hear anything you have to say! In the other writer/publisher thread, an author noted that he/she should have focused on a different, more lucrative career with writing as a hobby. Has this been your experience?
No, because I do love writing. I like making sh$t up for a living! And I especially love hearing from readers who tell me my book helped them escape a tough time in their life -- stuff like that. And I will never get sick of seeing my book in bookstores or the library. And I know my kids think it's very cool I write novels. But the money is dismal. If your first book was not a bestseller but still sold a decent amount you end up on something called the "midlist" which is where most authors are. They are still being paid, and can still publish, but it's not a lot of money and you don't get any support. Midlist authors usually get advances between $20k and $100k at the big five. Small indie publishers offer advances as low as $2k. OTOH, that's a bigger investment for that indie and they may push your book more. Some writers never get a second contract b/c their first book or two sold so poorly, so I am lucky that my publisher is still buying my books. You can AMA.
