Kids get seven classes at most schools so by the time they do pe and a foriegn language they don’t have time for their interests.  Summer health frees up a credit to take what they want.  Welcome.  [/quote]

Not trying to argue with you, but I'm not following why there wouldn't be room for four years of an elective otherwise? If they take 28 classes (4 years x 7 periods), and they take:
English x 4
Math x 4
Science x 4* 
Social Studies x 4*
Foreign Language x 4*
PE x 1
Health x 1
Fine Art x 1
Tech x 1

that comes to 24 classes, leaving 4 more for an elective.

*Four years are not required for science, social studies, or foreign language, so if you don't take 4 years of each, you'd have room for more electives.

Yes, it's possible to do 4 years of music as an elective as well as all the other basic graduation requirements.  However, some special programs such as IB or Project Lead the Way or the magnet programs or others have more requirements that make it impossible to fit it in each year.  Summer classes can help in that case, or if a kid wants to explore even more electives. [/quote]
