People love to fetishize a wood burning fireplace, but the BEST home upgrade we did was making our huge living room fireplace gas. I run it daily and it creates a wonderful ambiance. Get a fire pit for wood.
The time factor was why we knew we'd switch. In our old house we had wood and I made the fires only when we had long stretches of time at home. Plus the mess...with wood debris everywhere. And opening the door to get the wood and lug it. When we bought our second house we never used the fireplace until we switched to gas. Spouse uses it everyday for an hour, first thing in the morning, drinking coffee and reviewing email. We use it on our terms. It required a lot of research to do the switch and we found the process fairly cumbersome--once you know what you want then you can order it but there aren't a lot of showrooms. No regrets though.
