Just wondering how some of these all county selections are made. After my son played Sunday, we stayed to watch a Gainesville vs Vienna game. The basketball community is small and we know the best players, this has peaked my curiosity and I’ve been trying to figure this out. The Gainesville team had 4 All County Selections and the kid who is clearly their best player wasn’t even on the list. We know the Vienna players and of their three best players, one made the list twice, 2 were left off, and there was a questionable selection to the list. Does each coach select which players they want from their team, do opposing coaches have a vote, how does this work? Are there any checks and balances that the league incorporates. The selections from my sons team looked pretty accurate. The kids know who the top players are and I would hate to think, a coach would purposely mess a kid over, for whatever reason, even though sometimes you may hear rumors.
Coaches nominate up to 3 players as well as MVP nomination (if in top 5 of standings at time of nominations), including brief write up for each player on contribution/strengths. Then opposing coaches vote for up to 5 of the slate of nominees (as well as MVP winner). Coaches are NOT allowed to vote for their own players though don’t know how closely the league checks that (would have to be caught manually) and may lead to some shenanigans. But overall it’s opposing coaches recognizing top players without voting for their own.
Okay, so a kid can’t make it, if the coach doesn’t nominate him? And if the coach nominates 2 kids and one of them is also nominated for MVP, that kids name may come up twice. Opposing coaches can see who the best player is, so when a kid is obviously messed over, it’s likely an in-house thing right?
A kid could be having one amazing game that doesn't reflect his whole season. If the coach makes a MISTAKE and puts a kids name down for MVP and regular all-league, then that kid's name would come up twice. The only way to be considered for all-league is for a player's coach to nominate him. A kid being 'obviously messed over' (let me guess, it’s your kid)....not sure what you mean by that. Most coaches nominate their best players. With "best" to include practice attendance, teamwork, good sportsmanship, good attitude etc. My husband coached in this league for five seasons and we have never not seen the clearly strongest players not nominated for all league. Now the next, more subjective tier, sure.
Not my kid, but the Gainesvilles best player and he is hands down the best did not get one of 4 spots given to kids on that team. He got skipped 4 times. We are talking about the strongest, most athletic kid in the division. He needs some work, but he’s head and shoulders the best.
Then he got skipped over by his own coach, who may have some good reasons why the others were nominated and possibly went back and forth on which to nominate and which to leave off. It's worth acknowledging the three that were not the MVP nominations were ALL voted to the all county team by the coach's peers, so clearly they are good in their own right and it supports the player's coach's decision. Strongest most athletic doesn't mean best basketball player or even the best at a particular aspect of the game. You said it yourself the kid needs some work. This selection or omission has no bearing on this player's future as a basketball player. There's always next year, or always another team if getting the accolade is that important.
The kid needs work, but he doesn’t need work to be the best player on that team or probably the most attractive player in the league to a recruiter. Probably wouldn’t have given him the MVP, but he still was the most dominant player in the league. The MVP didn’t even come from his team. There is just no justification on the Gainesville kid being left out. I have played against the kid for years and never seen him demonstrate poor sportsmanship. I do know that he also plays for Takeover so maybe he missed some practices, but that doesn’t take away from him being the best player on the team. The Vienna Coach is going through some things. He coaches the same age group of AAU players and I am hearing that most of his team left him. One of the AAU kids unfortunately, was also on his County team and certainly one of the top 3 players. He coincidentally has been getting benched after informing the coach that he would not return to his AAU team and just happened to be overlooked for the All County selection. Don’t know why the the other of his top 3 guys didn’t get selected. I’d hate to think the Vienna coach was holding grudges and not coaching with integrity. I have been trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, but I guess if it walks likes a duck………
What AAU team does the Vienna guy coach?
Nova94 Premier, accept since almost his entire team left, I don’t think they will be Premier anymore.
