I am shocked people advocate summer courses to fit an instrument in high school. That is sad
We will do this. Orchestra is important to my child as are other classes. They’d rather get things like health out of the way in a few weeks vs months. It’s important to them so why wouldn’t you allow it.
It's only sad to people who don't appreciate music. Some kids love it and it's their main EC. If they aren't in HS orch, they can't be in All-State and other advanced ensembles.
There are always the private orchestras.
DC does both school orch and outside orchestra and all-state. They aren't interchangeable, and some kids love it so much they want every possible orchestra opportunity. If that's their main DC, why is that bad?
It's not, often it's because parents don't want the responsibility. It's a huge expense and lots of driving. My kid couldn't do it at school and school wouldn't refer them to all-state and other programs so we only did private. Mine would love to do all three too.
It’s no more expense than travel or club sports. HS teacher doesn’t refer kids to All State. Any kid who is taking orchestra band or chorus all year can audition. The big cost is the private lessons at $100+ per week. I can see parents not wanting to pay for that but not for orchestra.
Our club sport may cost more with other costs added on. Our private lesson is $60 or so. They have scholarships for lower income. Not a lot of choices if you have a music kid and your mcps school will not support it. We pay for one sport and one music as MCPS in not inclusive like they pretend. We just forgo other things to pay for it.
