DC does both school orch and outside orchestra and all-state. They aren't interchangeable, and some kids love it so much they want every possible orchestra opportunity. If that's their main DC, why is that bad?[/quote]

It's not, often it's because parents don't want the responsibility.  It's a huge expense and lots of driving.  My kid couldn't do it at school and school wouldn't refer them to all-state and other programs so we only did private.  Mine would love to do all three too.[/quote]

Every student who is in school band or orchestra can apply for All-state auditions.  My DS and many of his classmates at Blair SMAC did four years orchestra or band so they can audition for All-state.  It is a commitment the students made.  Audition is faraway but a lots of students carpooling so parents don’t have to go.
