Is it really hard to get in these days?
I guess you aren’t the parent of a senior? Lol Yes. My kid has a 4.0, excellent essays, etc and I don’t consider acceptance a sure thing.
Its a sure thing. Guaranteed.
Not the PP, but talk me off the ledge. Is it really a sure thing? My kid in in a magnet with 4.0 unw gpa, high SAT score (does UMD even look at SAT scores now or is it optional?). Is it really a guarantee? I confess I'm a worry wart, and I'm so nervous for my DC.
I wouldn’t say a sure thing but if they are in state and submitted high SAT scores and have rigorous courses to go along with the 4.0 unweighted and halfway decent ECs and essay - an outright rejection would be rare. At worst, I’ve heard of high weighted GPA, high submitted test scores kids, with ECs and good essay getting spring admissions, not getting their LEP, or not getting into honors/merit which would seem typical for those stats.
Thanks to all PPs. The wgpa is like 4.67 or something like that. I thought the essay was good, but obviously I'm biased. ECs are ok, not spectacular. I'm worried about the "rare" exception, I guess, but that's what worry warts do, worry about the rare exceptions. LOL I over prepare for everything. I'll be glad when this is all over. DC did apply to other schools, but even if they only get UMD, I'll be so relieved. I think I'm more worried than my DC is. LOL. Some of my worries are about finances, too.
PP here, I’ve been keeping track of UMD for a few years and the surprise rejection decisions I’ve seen tend to be either high stats students missing something (like high stat no ECs or bad essays or not a lot of rigor) or the next tier down of really strong, but not the top students that would have gotten into UMD a few years ago but now the average GPA/test score of admitted students from their school is higher than what they have making it a target or reach rather than safety like the poster that mentioned before 4.3 was likely now it’s 4.5 from their school. And understand that 4.3 student is likely mostly A, a few Bs, nothing lower than a B in honors and AP courses at a competitive high school. Meanwhile if you haven’t been watching the admission stats rise and are from the area, you might be thinking, oh in the 1990’s….
