WTF is up with the anti-beef stew posters? Anyone care to explain?
Sure its fine for the family on a cold Sunday... but its not a great dinner party food. Some people get upset stomachs from a meal like this. It also doesn't allow for guests to eat "around" it if its not something you like or that sits well with you... meaning if you were serving chicken, potatoes, greens and bread, the guest could skip the chicken if needed and eat the rest. With a stew, you're screwed. Its too heavy all around.
Why would you get an upset stomach from such a simple meal? It’s really not a heavy or rich. Filling yes, but not heavy. The meat is typically very lean and you don’t need to add much fat when cooking. I don’t. The only fat is the little in the meat and a bit of oil to sear the cubed roast. It doesn’t have unusual ingredients that people don’t usually like, and even if the don’t it’s easy enough to eat around the potatoes or carrots or whatever. You wouldn’t say prime rib, mashed potatoes, and roast vegetables wasn’t a great dinner party food and it’s literally all the same ingredients.
