I loved “What is the What,” OP! It’s one of my all time favorites.
Really, I thought about putting this in the other thread about books others like but I didn't. When I was reading it initially I think I was sold it as a fantasy and I didn't see that aspect. Once I learned (more of) what it was about, I wasn't interested in it (then). Now I think I'm ready to dive into more adult reads.
I agree with others. It wasn’t sold as a fantasy. Maybe you’re thinking of something else?
Being over half through it, I can now see why it was sold as fantasy. It's not the magic and wizards of dragons type fantasy but there is a mystic element of it. The entire narrative is surrounded by the question of "what is the what". That's the question based on the creation story (fantasy element) there the Sudanese chose cows as their gift from God whereas the others were left with the other thing, the what. There are all kinds of stories of what the what is and the power behind it. Then there are the fantasies about Ethiopia, and my favorite, his way of going to sleep by constructing his ideal day by stitching together his favorite memories. I want to try that.
