People will always drive. Encouraging bike fanatics to share road space during peak traffic times - and I am talking specifically about bike fanatics, this is a nuisance and dangerous IMO. If you live in DC, take metro and/or walk to work. Bike miles on a bike path. My vision is also to stop unchecked growth. Stop building and building more density that cannot be supported by current transportation and school systems and other government services.
Your future view is not based in any sense of reality. First of all, the human species population growth will continue on the trajectory it has, which is geometric, so our cities will need to continue to grown to house and accommodate the growth. Second, the single occupancy vehicles is the least efficient form of moving people around, both from an economic as well as space perspective. Finally, the people you care calling bike fanatics pay the same taxes and have the same rights to public space that you do. In fact, our laws codify that a cyclist is allowed to use the full lane of a road when they are moving. It is out of courtesy that any cyclist stays to the right so as to no inconvenience the driver.
