Omg- poor woman. She is apparently fixated on this, real or not. make her feel better with a little white lie. Just say sorry mom, it’s ok, DH said it was likely a kid who left the burner on, or someone else. Be gentle with her, but keep watching for other signs of cognitive decline. This may have just been an isolated incident
My friend's mom almost burned down the house. I get it. All the experts tell you to tell therapeutic lies and play into the crazy, but after a while it can make you want to jump out a window. Something is wrong if mom left the burners on and mom needs an evaluation. I would not leave mom alone in the kitchen and hope for the best. I would push for an evaluation not just by a neurologist, but an aging professional who comes to her home. Then, if she burns down her house you can feel like you tried to prevent it. I tip toes around crazy making behavior for years and I really think despite getting therapy it made me nuts. I guess you can use all the tips and hope you never burn out, but after years and years I did and it got worse and worse. My just got more comfortable acting like a paranoid and hostile curmudgeon, whereas for people who would just leave or quit she stopped pretty quickly.
