High school teacher in NoVa. To my knowledge, at my school it’s common for 1/3 of the class to fail. It’s not new, so it’s not due to covid. We’re required by the VDOE to teach at the level of difficulty of the SOL. That level is waaaay beyond the average level of the kids who are placed in my classes. I try desperately to raise my pass rates (regularly working 16 hours/day or more). I feel awful for the children who are being set up to fail. The kids feel stupid… they internalize the message that they’re a failure… but they’re stuck in a dysfunctional system, as are we all. We need to normalize the idea of taking TIME to lay down a strong pre-algebra foundation in middle school. We rush too many kids into algebra (and beyond) before they’re developmentally ready for the abstract reasoning that is requisite for success in algebra & beyond. We need to accept that it’s OK to study MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH while in middle school. No need to rush to algebra & geometry just to appear (or feel) more prestigious or “advanced.” Do your kid a favor and let them take their time with the middle school curriculum.
