My 4th grader too. We have battles on picture day and special occasions. She won this year when she ditched the hoodie but then kept her jacket on for her school picture.
Why battle over school pictures? Going all the way back to preschool, we've always let our kids choose what they want to wear for this. We look back and see their school pictures as a true reflection of who they are that year. Plus, in the age of digital cameras, we have other opportunties to get pictures of them dressed up for special occassions. Weddings/bar mitzvahs/big holidays involve a bit less choice on their part, in part because they're communal events. But we've always seen school pictures as first and foremost about THEM, so they get to be more authentic.
