They actually did hand us (untrained, outside people) chainsaws and we spent the day cutting downs trees from houses in residential neighborhoods. All of the utility trucks you see on the news heading to the effected area are focused on clearing roads / highways / government / business and commercial areas. The smaller neighborhoods could wait weeks for tree removal. Better to bring your own chainsaw, and coordinate with a local volunteer group. 30+ days after a hurricane, when it has faded from the news, is when locals really need help. The whole world has moved on, and they are still living in a house with a hole in the roof and no power, all of their clothing and belonging lost. And the kids continue to go to school and the parents go to work.[/quote]
